Interactive Cultural – Auckland Project

The intention of my project is to investigate how graphic design can contribute to the development of an interface that represents the Auckland City Councils public/cultural Institutions (such as Auckland Museum) in order to develop the relationship between audience and the sites. This project is initially set to run for one year, and it involves four people in a team.

My final framework is to develop a user friendly mobile application for smart phone that can be used for any of three institutions such as Auckland Museum, Auckland Zoo and Motat. This application is designed to assist people navigating, understanding the environment and having best experience when they explore onsite. The application will be suitable for all smart phone users. However, the target audience is the tourists or people who use English as second language, and the age range is around 25to 44 years old as this age group has higher rate of using smart phone than other age group (Survey was conducted for this finding)

Thus User Centre Design is critical.  There are following point raised up. For example:

  •   How the users interact in space?
  •   How do they feel?
  •   In what way that user experience can be improved?

The development of the prototypes is trying to solve problem that the audience might encounter during visiting the sites such as:

  •   Allowing my audience to select any font size that might be comfortable for them to view
  •   Choosing their own languages.

There will be many user testing in order to see if the feature is useful and functional or not, or any other possible features. Therefore, I can figure out what is the best solution for them.

My design will include key areas of investigation such as symbolic use of colour, typography, shape, image/text relationship, and navigational preferences.

Throughout site visiting at Auckland Art Gallery, the building structure amazed me through the concepts of using transparency wall glass to create a sense of modern design, especially show what institution has. I really like the way the transparency is being used. Therefore, black banner transparency was selected to give a sense of the secrecy of the institution by showing the contrast.

My decision on using colour is based the colour schemes from each institutions in order to build the consistency between them such as Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet and Black. These colours will be used to design in an application, however, there will be a possibility of adding some colours due to the need of design.

My primary choice of typeface for the institutions is Helvetica, I have decided to use this typeface is because :

  •   Simplistic and Modern
  •   Legible
  •   Suitable to view in any size
  •   Sans Serif font is better to view in screen display
  •   Sans Serif font is used in institutions (Motat, Auckland Museum, and Auckland Zoo) through website, publication etc…

However, during the process of prototyping, the “decision making” happens frequently at the beginning because information was not fully gathered.  the design concepts was initially modified due to the reason of designing an application for Andriod, not for Iphone. Secondly there are consideration of possibility of creating one big main screen with three institutions as sub-categories or only one institution each.

Team work is most important in the whole process; it is a new experience and challenging goal that involve in taking responsibility and having trust. We all understand that a member of team must take own repsonsiblity to complete the task on time, therefore, we can share the research and idea, then make decision through discussion.
